Barry Hinson is starting his sixth season with Southwest Missouri State in 2004 with a record of 89-68 (.567) and an overall record as a Division I head coach of 125-91 (.578).
Hinson was mens head basketball coach at Oral Roberts for two seasons where he went 36-23 (.610) prior to taking the helm at SMS in 1999.
Hinson, whose first year mark of 23-11 (.676) was the best in Bears history became only the fourth coach in the 92 years the Bears have been playing basketball to win 20 games in his first season as head coach.
Other achievements the Bears and Henson earned in that remarkable 23 win season include, only the 24th season with 20 or more wins, went to the NIT postseason tournament where the Bears progressed to the second round before being knocked out. SMS's conference record of 13-5 was matched by them only one other time in the Bears league history.
Hinson, who graduated from Oklahoma State University started his coaching odyssey as a high school coach in Oklahoma. After four years as an assistant to Bill Self at Oral Roberts, head coach at Kansas since 2003, Hinson succeeded Self at ORU in 1987 when Self went to Tulsa.
Hinson earned a B. S. Degree in Secondary Social Sciences from Oklahoma State University.
Hinson and his wife, Angie, have two daughters, Tiffany and Ashley.
