Don Meyer is in 7th place on the all time list of winning coaches in mens collegiate basketball. He is only 7 wins away from the 800 win plateau, a feat accomplished by only six other college basketball coaches in history. He is looking up at names like Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp and
Dean Smith.
Before coming to Northern State University prior to the 1999-2000 season Meyer was head basketball coach at NAIA I David Lipscomb University for 24 years. At Lipscomb he achieved the 700 win milestone quicker than any coach in the history of mens college basketball.
The Lipscomb Bisons under Meyers guidance averaged 32 wins per season over the last 10 seasons prior to his move to NSU. The Bisons during this period won more basketball games than any team in the country and set a college basketball record with 41 wins in the 1989-90 season.
Meyer was chosen NAIA National Coach of the Year following the 1988-89 season and the 1989-90 season. He took the Bisons' to 13 national tournaments and won the 1986 NAIA National Championship. Meyer was elected to the NAIA Hall of Fame at the unlikely age of 47.
Meyers', whose coaching credentials are unquestioned by his peers, his employers and perhaps most importantly by his players has produced three National Players of the Year and 22 All-Americans. Along the way he has seen his teams lead the nation in scoring in five seasons averaging more than 100 ppg. in each of these five seasons. In addition he has coached college basketball's first and second all-time leading scorers.
Meyers' has continued his winning ways at Northern State University. Thru the 2003-04 season he has a mark of 91-51 (.640) for five seasons. He led the Wolves to their first ever NSIC Tournament Championship and to the NCAA Regionals in Denver, Colorado following the 2003-04 season.
He coached the NSU Wolves to the NSIC co-championship in 2002, his third season at Northern State. For his outstanding efforts during and following the 2001-02 season Meyer was named NSIC Coach of the Year.
The Don Meyer's Coaches Academy, established for nine years, has attracted better than 10,000 basketball coaches from all over the country. His reputation as a coach and teacher has allowed him to attract some of the most renowned coaches in the country to speak at his Academy
including such names as Pat Summitt and John Wooden.
