Henry Bibby Biography

Henry Bibby who was the starting point guard at UCLA during the Bruins salad days experienced the thrill of helping them win three three consecutive NCAA championships, (1970-72). Bibby earned consensus All-American honors ss a senior in 1972 when he was also the team's captain. The Bruins went 87-3 during his varsity collegiate career including 30-0 in 1972, his senior year and the year he was team captain. Bibby averaged 15.7 points that season.

He won several awards while at UCLA including the Seymour Armond Award as UCLA's most valuable freshman player. In 1970, Bibby earned the Irv Pohlmeyer Trophy, which is awarded the outstanding first-year varsity player. That same year he also won the Calkins Trophy for highest free throw percentage. In his junior year Bibby won the NCAA Tournament Trophy for all-around excellence in the NCAA Championships. In his senior season Bibby won the Alumni Association Award for academic achievement and team contribution, as well as his second consecutive NCAA Tournament Trophy and was named a Consensus All-American.

After being picked by the New York Knicks in the NBA draft in 1972 Bibby played 9 years in the NBA and earned a reputation for being able to provide instant offense. For his NBA career, spread over 4 teams, Bibby in a total of 675 games, scored 5,775 points, dished out 2,259 assists and pulled down 1,581 rebounds. His field goal percentage was 42.4% and he made an outstanding 78.2% of his free throws. The New York Knicks won the NBA title Bibby's rookie year, he also made two other appearances in the NBA Finals, both with the Philadelphia 76ers.

After his NBA playing days Bibby moved to the Continental Basketball Association where he was a player and assistant coach for the Lancaster Lightning, who won the CBA title in 1982. He then was a head coach for eight seasons in the CBA. Bibby's teams made it to the CBA playoffs six times winning the championship in 1989 with Bibby being named CBA Coach of the Year. He is one of only four CBA coaches to have 200 wins.

Bibby joined the University of Southern California Trojan basketball program in May of 1995 as an assistant coach. He was named USC's interim head coach in Febuary of 96'. In his seven years as head coach, Bibby has been a guiding force in player development and has coached eight players to a combined 13 All-Pac-10 honors and five players to All-Pac-10 Freshman honors. Seven of USC's top 20 scorers of all time, and eight of its 28 1,000-point scorers have played under Bibby.

Bibby holds a rather unusual distinction, being the only person to ever play for an NCAA, NBA and CBA championship team. Fueling the Trojan's enthusiasm is the comforting knowledge Bibby coached the Trojans to only their second ever back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2001 and 2002 and only their third ever back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. With 21 years of college and pro experience under his belt USC is quite confident the men's basketball program is in the right hands.
