Joe Roman Biography

Beginning with the 2009 season Joe Roman has been a head coach in the professional (European) football ranks for five seasons. After a four season stint as head coach of the Hamburg Blue Devils in Hamburg Germany he resigned to return to Austria to continue his coaching career.

He was head coach and defensive coordinator for the Danube Dragons in the 2004 season leading them to the semi-finals of the playoffs.

Joe Roman has coached in the college football ranks for 29 seasons. First at the College of DuPage for 21 seasons then the past 8 seasons at Joilet Junior College.

Roman has coached defense his entire career which has been outstanding to say the least. Bob MacDougall, with whom Roman has coached all but one of his seasons, and current head football coach at Joilet says: "Joe's strength in analyzing the opponent and their thought process is unmatched." High praise indeed from a head coach widely acknowledged as one of the most successful football coaches in the college game today.

MacDougall ought to know of what he speaks given his credentials which include having the second best winning record of any active National Junior College Athletic Association coach not to mention being a member of the NJCAA Hall of Fame.

Roman moved on to Joilet Junior College from Dupage with Bob MacDougall, where he is once again plying his trade as a "defensive football guru." The 2002 JJC season serves as a reminder of how good Roman is. The Wolves defense allowed just a 185 yards of total offense in 10 regular season games, an average of 18.5 yards per game of total offense.

Thanks, in part to the Wolves defensive unit Joilet enjoyed a perfect 11-0 season, the schools first ever. The team went on to defeat No.1 ranked Georgia Military Academy in the annual bowl classic held in Brunswick, Georgia. Coming off their outstanding bowl performance the Joilet Junior College Wolves were voted No. 1 in the country by the NJCAA voters.

American Football Monthly Magazine named Roman the 2002 Junior College Defensive Coordinator of the year. He has been honored by both AFLAC and the Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director Magazine as the top assistant coach for 2002.

In the 21 seasons Roman was the defensive coordinator at the College of Dupage he helped coach the Chaparrals to a remarkable 182-61 (.749) record. Together with MacDougall Roman helped transform the Chaparrals into an NJCCA formidable program to be reckoned with.

The Dupage Chapparels went to post-season bowl games 14 times during Roman's tenure.

Dupage, in a three-year stretch set an NJCCA record, winning 36 consecutive games. Their opponents averaged just 176 yards of total offense while holding the opponents offense to an incredible average of just 5.9 points per game, a testimony to Roman's defensive coaching prowess.

During his time at Dupage Roman coached the Chapparel defense to top 10 status in the nation's team defensive rankings nine different seasons. The Chapparel defensive unit finished one season ranked first in the country and went undefeated for the season. Roman's defense gave up a total for the season of only 51 points spread over 12 games averaging yeilding a paltry 4.25 points per game and allowing a miserly 132 total yards per game in offense. Roman helped coach the Chapparels to 12 State Junior College Championships.

Roman earned his BS in Physical Education from Moorhead State University and his Masters in Physical Education from Wayne State University.
