Sam McCorkle with over 30 years of college football coaching experience to his credit has been named the head coach of the University of West Alabama Tigers football team for the 2004 season.
UWA's athletic director, Dee Outlaw, said he was pleased McCorkle was back as head football coach. He brings a spirit and loyalty to our institution that is matched by very few. He loves this school and I know his desire and drive will take us to a different level.
McCorkle, who returned to UWA, his alma mater, for the 2003 season as coach of the linebacking corps had previously been the head football coach at UWA (then Livingston University) from 1985 thru the 1990 season.
Prior to returning to UWA in 2003 was head football coach at the University of Tennessee-Martin for three seasons.
He has been an assistant football coach at several SEC schools including the University of Mississippi and Vanderbilt. He was the recruiting coordinator for all sports at the University of Kentucky.
McCorkle was the starting center on Livingston University's (now UWA) 1971 National Championship team under legendary coach Mickey Andrews.
McCorkle received his Bachelor of Science in Education from UWA in 1973 and received his M.E. in Secondary Education from UWA a year later.
He and his wife Diane, both of Meridian, Miss. have a daughter, Laura and a son, Blaine.
