When first year head coach Robb Akey with his extensive defensive background, was hired by the University of Idaho he knew exactly who he wanted to have calling the shots on offense; none other than Steve Axman, who was Akey's boss when both were at Northern Arizona University in the 1990s. Akey went to his long-time friend to serve as offensive coordinator as he puts together his staff at the University of Idaho. Axman joins the Vandals after spending last season coaching at the University of Montana.
Together once again, Akey is eager to start the season with Axman. The team has certainly worked well before. While at NAU, the tandem put together the first team in school history to make it to the Division I-AA playoffs, and a No. 6 ranking in the season's final poll. Akey attributes that success at NAU to Axman's offense."Everywhere he has been it has been a productive offense and he has been the reason for that," Akey said.
"I like being able to bring experience to this staff," Akey said. "He has coordinated at the highest level, he has been in the Pac 10, the ACC, and he has put a number of quarterbacks into the NFL. Troy Aikman played for him at UCLA, Marques Tuiasosopo at UW, and Neil O'Donnell at Maryland so he has a long list of success in different spots."
"He has been through the situation that I've put myself into as a head coach," Akey said. "So I've got a sounding board in someone who has been through the same situation, and I think that will help out tremendously in regards to being the head football coach and in building the program the way that we want it." It is obvious Akey values the experience that Axman brings to the Vandals. He coaches the style of offense that I want to play here," Akey said. "It's going to be an exciting offense, he's put some exciting and explosive offenses on the field."
Veteran coach Steve Axman has joined the coaching staff at Montana, as the team's quarterbacks coach beginning with the 2006 season. Axman joins Montana with experiece as a former head coach at Northern Arizona, as well as a QB coach at various stops including Maryland, UCLA and Washington.
"We are very fortunate to be able to bring in a coach of Steve's caliber to work with our staff and our players," Griz coach Bobby Hauck said in a statement. "It is a tremendous opportunity for our quarterbacks to be coached by a man who has coached numerous NFL quarterbacks. At this stage of the game, it's great to have a guy with Steve's experience who can come in, get off the plane, and start coaching because he's seen it and done it all."
Hauck is very familiar with Axman having coached together at both Northern Arizona University and the University of Washington. Axman coached the quarterbacks for the 12-2 (06') Montana Grizzlies.
Washington Huskies football coach Keith Gilbertson announced in February 2004 he had filled the wide receivers coaching slot with the addition of Steve Axman who had gone back to UCLA as offensive coordinator for the 2003 season.
Axman previously worked at the Universty of Washington from 1999-2002 as Washington's quarterbacks coach. Axman had been on now departed Rick Neuheisel's Husky staff for four years as quarterbacks coach and the last two years added assistant head coach to his duties.
Axman, who has a excellent reputation for developing quarterbacks, certainly has coached some outstanding college quarterback talent during his career. He was at UCLA in 1987 and 1988 where he coached Troy Aikman who went on to a "Hall of Fame" career with the NFL Dallas Cowboys. In 1989 while with the University of Maryland he coached Neil O'Donnell who has had a solid NFL career.
More recently Axman was the head coach at Northern Arizona from 1990 through 1997. His 1996 Northern Arizona Lumberjacks averaged over 43 points per game, had an overall 9-3 record and a 6-1 conference (Big Sky) record. The Lumberjacks produced the school's first ever postseason
appearance and a number six national ranking, best in school history.
The Lumberjacks led the nation in total offense with over (522) yards per game and were third in passing with (311) yards per game. That year Northern Arizona became the first college football team to have a 2,000 yard rusher in Archie Amerson who won the Walter Payton Award and Travis Brown a 3,000 yard passer in the same season. For his efforts Axman received the Region V Coach of the Year award following the 1996 season.
In his first go around with the Huskies Axman coached quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo, named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and MVP of the Rose Bowl his senior year. Tuiasosopo was taken in the NFL draft in the second round (59th pick overall) by the Oakland Raiders in the
2001 draft. During Axman's last season at Washington, quarterback Cody Pickett became the first quarterback in Pac-10 history to pass for over 4,000 yards in a season.
A 1969 graduate of C.W. Post in upstate N.Y., Axman earned his first master's degree from Long Island University in 1972 and his second in 1975 while coaching at East Stroudsburg State.
