Sometime after the end of the 2004 football season Tom Jones "hung up the spikes" and became the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) district representative for the Mid-American Conference where he has been ever since.
Jones has 14 years coaching experience at the NCAA Division I-A level and 20 plus years total coaching at the college level. All of his experience has been as a defensive coach with several years experience as a defensive coordinator.
His last seven years have been coaching defense at the University of Buffalo, first as a defensive line coach and the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator. Jones, the longest-tenured Buffalo assistant coach, was promoted to defensive coordinator this past spring after a highly-successful tenure with the Bulls.
His defensive units continue to make improvements despite at times starting a bevy of redshirt freshmen. In 2002 the Bulls achieved 27 sacks, the most they have had since moving up to the I-A division.
In 2001 two of Jones defensive tackles signed to NFL free agent contracts with the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals, respectively.
Prior to coming to Buffalo Jones coached in a variety of defensive roles for five years at Kent State.
Before Kent State Jones was defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for one year at Western Conncticut State.
Previously he had coached the defensive line and outside linebackers at Idaho State for three years. He also coached defense for a season each at Ohio State, Arizona State and New Mexico State.
Prior to New Mexico State Jones had coached the University of Buffalo defensive line for two years. His 1998 defensive front accumulated 19 sacks for the season.
Jones earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Temple University.
